About Us

Who we are, where we come from, and where we're headed as a church family

Who we are

Montgomery Church has been around for nearly 60 years (sounds old, but we are just getting started!) We have been through a lot during that time, from moving facilities to making great connections in our neighborhood to figuring out how to "do church" during a pandemic! Ministry never gets boring!

Here at Montgomery Church we believe that when you follow God, connect to the church, discover your purpose, and serve others, you will experience a life fulfilled. Whether you’ve been attending here a few years, months, or even just a day—we are committed to helping you grow closer to Christ in these ways.

We summarize our mission around here in this way: Making disciples of Jesus Christ who love God and love others. We do this in three ways: Gather, Grow, and Go. We GATHER for worship every week where we can fellowship, sing, share communion, pray, and learn more about God's Word. We GROW in our faith through Life Groups that meet at various times during the week throughout the Albuquerque area. We GO by serving our neighbors through our Wednesday night programming, local school partnerships, and regular service events.

We know that God is up to something incredible in this community and in this city. We'd love for you to join us on this crazy journey of following Jesus and bringing the hope of heaven to the earth!

Where we come from

Montgomery Church comes from a church planting heritage. In the 1950s, the 5th and Marble Church of Christ planted congregations in developing Albuquerque neighborhoods, including the San Pedro Blvd Church of Christ that later grew into the Montgomery Blvd Church of Christ in 1964.

The initial Montgomery Church building was alone in a field on a dirt road called Montgomery Blvd, now one of the busiest streets in New Mexico! In 2020, the original Montgomery Blvd building was sold and the congregation moved across the street to a new building. The spirit of reaching and serving those in our neighborhood, as well as in other countries, remains.

Where we're headed

5 Year Horizon - 2024

Imagine that Montgomery had a gauge that showed the desire for change in our neighborhood. If it registered basic desires such as food, housing and low crime as well as deeper desires like connection, hope, and love, it would, no doubt, show a high desire for improvement.

Because we are Jesus followers, we live in a transformed community with other followers; we look to Jesus as our perfect example of the Christian walk; we experience the power and freedom that comes from the Spirit; and we accept and assist in spreading the good news of Jesus Christ.

With this backdrop, we recognize that when we are Spirit-led, we can make a huge positive change in our neighborhood. Our 5-year plan is to become the restoration movement of God that our diverse neighborhood needs:

We will GATHER for worship, making our worship upbeat, welcoming, and comfortable. We will engage neighbors by building one-on-one relationships, modeling Jesus in our behavior, gathering in a variety of locations/times, and providing attractive insights online. We see future gatherings that are more representative of our neighborhood, reach both the churched and unchurched, give guidance in spiritual formation, and provide the experience of being in the presence of the all-loving God.

We will GROW together in life groups where we can develop close-knit relationships, develop spiritually, and practice what we preach – loving God and loving others. In the future we see many people engaged and committed to meeting regularly. We see the growth that comes from closeness, support, and challenges between group members. We see members giving neighbors a helping hand and inviting them to GATHER, GROW, or GO with us when appropriate.

We will GO to our neighbors by focusing on highly relationship-oriented initiatives that provide big value to the recipients as well as to the GOers. We see ourselves being superstars at GOing, not feeling nervous about interacting with strangers. We see learning how to comfortably start chats and boldly build significant relationships; learning how to help and coach people or, at least, point them to help; and learning how to go beyond giving people “stuff” to actually improving their entire long-term situation.  In the next 5 years we will have at least 4000 connections with others about the relationships, hope and love that is available to them.
